Our customer called us up with a fault on their Morris Ropemaster crane hoist, saying that over the course of the week it had become louder than usual and that oil was all over their workshop. We sent an engineer straight out the same day to diagnose the fault.
What we found after stripping down the Morris gearbox front cover guard and cleaning it down was a large hole in the oil chamber which had drained all of its contents out, dripping down from the crane. The gears had run dry and were wearing without any lubrication. What we proceeded to do was fully degrease and clean down the gearbox guard and prep ready to weld up the hole on site, as seen in the photos above, with our portable welding equipment. After repairing the guard we re-fitted and re-filled the gearbox chamber with oil.
